Swindon Wildcats 4-1 Leeds Knights
The Swindon Wildcats got their 40th anniversary weekend off to the perfect start on Friday night, securing an impressive 4-1 victory over the Leeds Knights at the Link Centre, with a host of Wildcats Legends in attendance to mark the special occasion.
Despite dominating large spells of the opening period, neither side could find a breakthrough in the first 20 minutes, setting up an intriguing second period.
It was the visitors who struck first, with Danny Harrison finding the net at 23:04 to give Leeds the lead. However, the Wildcats responded almost immediately, capitalising on a five-on-three power play as Caden Villegas fired home at 24:39 to bring the scores level.
With momentum firmly swinging in the home side's favour, Sean Richards put the Cats ahead with less than three minutes remaining in the second period. Richards sent the puck towards the net, with it finding its way through traffic and past Gospel to give Aaron Nell's side the lead for the first time on the night.
The Wildcats weren't finished there, though. With just 36 seconds remaining in the period, Matthew Vermaeten produced a superb finish into the top corner, extending his goal-scoring streak to six consecutive games and sending the Cats into the final period with a commanding 3-1 advantage.
Swindon continued where they left off in the third, putting the game beyond doubt at 44:41. Liam Fraser reacted quickest to a loose puck before calmly slotting it past Gospel to register the Wildcats' fourth goal of the evening.
From there, the Cats showed their professionalism, managing the remainder of the game well to see out a convincing 4-1 victory and give the home crowd plenty to celebrate.
The result provided the perfect start to a landmark weekend for the club, with Wildcats Legends returning to the Link Centre to celebrate 40 years of hockey in Swindon.
With Friday night's victory setting the tone, attention now turns to Saturday's anniversary celebrations, as the club brings together past and present players to honour the history, memories and people that have helped shape the Swindon Wildcats over the last four decades.
