A PETERBOROUGH Phantoms’ overtime strike inflicted a winless weekend on Swindon Wildcats in NIHL South One on Sunday, although they did have the consolation of a point to show for their efforts after a 3-2 defeat.
The Cats were beaten 5-2 by Raiders on home ice on Saturday, but came up short in their hopes of a return to winning ways at Peterborough as Glenn Billing struck a late winner for the home side.
Toms Rutkis broke the deadlock for the Cats in the opening period after being fed the puck superbly by Max Birbraer on the powerplay, but Peterborough’s James Ferrara swiftly restored parity with a nice breakaway goal to ensure it was all-square at the end of the first period.
The middle session fairly even with both sides looking to take advantage without being the side to give anything away at the other end. The Phantoms did manage to score the go-ahead goal when James Ferrara again converted, this time tapping home a loose puck on a rebound right at the end of a powerplay.
However that goal was cancelled out when Adam Harding broke free down the right wing and fired in low past Jordan Marr to tie the game up at 2.
Neither side was able to must a winning goal in the final period, meaning overtime was required to settle matters.
The overtime period began very end to end, Edgars Bebris probably having the best chance for the Wildcats after cutting in past the D man from the left hand side. However it was the Phantoms who got the game winner, when Robert Ferrara fed the puck down low to Glenn Billing who deked around Renny Marr and slid the puck into the back of the net at 63:18.
