Swindon Wildcats are delighted to announce the signing of British defenceman Sam Jones for the upcoming NIHL season.

The 20-year-old signs from the Summerland Storm, who play in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League in Canada. Sam, who captained the Storm last year, may be familiar to some Wildcats fans after his spell with the MK Lightning in the 16-17 EPL season.

As he hails from Birmingham, he qualifies to play as a Brit and will be pivotal as part of the defence. Last year in 45 games he scored an impressive 31 points, highlighting his offensive abilities despite his main job being to help keep the puck away from the net.

The Jones name may be familiar to some as Sam’s brother, Adam, has recently signed in Basingstoke so will add an extra level of spice when we take on the Bison.

Head Coach Aaron Nell was pleased to have secured his latest recruit:

“Sam is going to be a big player for us, he makes us so much stronger at the back and his experience in the UK already will really help us. I’m really excited by the defence this year, bringing in someone like Sam will help take pressure off some of the other guys like Stevie Whitfield, Neil Liddiard and Sam Godfrey.

He’s so excited to get underway in Swindon and I cannot wait to see him on the ice in September. Hopefully, he’ll become a crucial part of the club.

Sam was absolutely thrilled to be joining the Wildcats, and when speaking to swindonwildcats.com he added:

“After last season in Summerland, I was torn between coming back to the UK or going to University in Canada. I got in touch with Aaron and once I spoke to him my mind was set. Swindon has a top notch set up, the fans are brilliant and by the sounds of it, the club has a great culture which I’m really excited to be a part of.

Although I don’t know too much about the guys on the team, it looks like a competitive roster and hopefully, we can win some trophies. I know Luc from our time in MK and he has talked incredibly highly of the group and I can’t wait until September.

I would describe myself as a smooth skating D man, I move the puck well and I like to contribute offensively wherever I can. The fans are at the core of every club and from playing in Swindon before I can see how passionate and enthusiastic they are. I want to express my gratitude in advance, without you the club wouldn’t exist and I promise to do everything I can to win some trophies for you this season. See you in September!”.
